Growing up, I remember not liking "old" movies. I did love old TV – Alfred Hitchcock Presents and I Love Lucy being two of my favorites. I know, it doesn't make sense to me, either.

Years later, I realize how much missed time I have to make up. There are so many classics that you need to see if you have any interest in filmmaking. On the chance that there's someone else out there like me, these are some of my absolute favorite movies released before 1980. (There are still many I need to cross off my list of shame.)

1. Rear Window (1954, Alfred Hitchcock)

2. Alien (1979, Ridley Scott)

3. North by Northwest (1959, Hitchcock)

4. Psycho (1960, Hitchcock)

5. Badlands (1973, Terrence Malick)

6. Days of Heaven (1978, Malick)

7. A Clockwork Orange (1971, Stanley Kubrick)

8. Taxi Driver (1976, Martin Scorsese)

9. Jaws (1975, Steven Spielberg)

10. Dog Day Afternoon (1975, Sidney Lumet)

11. Vertigo (1958, Hitchcock)
